Preparation for the Savior: Bible Lesson Plan for Advent or Christmas
Based on Luke 1:5-25.
Introduction: Zacharias & Elizabeth
Hold up a large gift bag and ask:
Have you ever really, really wanted something? Something you asked for over and over?
Did you get what you asked for? How did that make you feel?
If you didn’t get it, how did that make you feel?
Introduce Zacharias and Elizabeth to the kids:
A long, long time ago in the land of Israel, there was a couple who also really wanted something.
Their names were Zacharias and Elizabeth. They loved God and served Him, but there was something that they asked Him for over and over.
Now, they were getting old, and God still hadn’t answered their prayer.
Can you guess what they wanted so much?
Invite a child to come up and see what’s in the gift bag. Ask him to pull the baby doll from the bag. Say:
Zacharias and Elizabeth really, really wanted a baby.
But they were getting old—too old to have a baby—and God still hadn’t answered their prayer.
Optional: Mention that God doesn’t always answer prayers with a “yes,” but His plans are always best. If He answers “no,” it’s because He knows it is best. We can always trust Him, even when He doesn’t answer our prayers with a “yes.”
1) A Prayer Answered
Explain that Zacharias was a priest and served at the temple. Give as much explanation as your kids need, based on their age and previous knowledge of Israel’s system of worship.
Then say:
One day when Zacharias was serving in the temple, suddenly he saw something he wasn’t expecting—it was an angel!
Put on the white robe and add:
Zacharias was startled, but the angel told him, “Don’t be afraid!”
Then he gave him some very good news. He said, “Your prayer is heard! Your wife will have a son, and you shall name him John.”
Wow! Finally God had answered Zacharias and Elizabeth’s prayers!
But that wasn’t all. God had a very specific reason for giving this son to Zacharias and Elizabeth...
